Today, we’re going to talk about something that’s just as important as your physical training – it’s called Mental Performance Training (MPT).
What is MPT?
MPT is all about training your mind to help improve your performance in sports. You might have heard the often used quotes like:
- “Sports are 90% mental and 10% physical” or
- “If you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right”.
Although cliché, these phrases highlight the importance of our mental state in sports performance.
Why is MPT Often Neglected?
Even though we understand the importance of MPT, it’s often overlooked. Here are some of the common reasons why:
- Lack of Knowledge and Access: Some people are not familiar with MPT.
- Misunderstanding about Mental Skills: Some people have misconceptions about what MPT involves.
- Lack of Time: Some people feel they don’t have enough time to dedicate to MPT.
Common Myths about MPT
There are also some myths about MPT that we need to debunk:
- MPT is for “problem” athletes only.
- This is not true. All athletes, regardless of their skill level, can benefit from MPT.
- MPT is for “elite” athletes only.
- Again, this is not true. MPT can be beneficial for athletes at all levels. The key is to tailor the training to the specific needs of the athlete.
- MPT provides “quick fix” solutions.
- MPT is not about quick fixes. Just like any other skill, training your mind takes time, practice, and systematic implementation.
- MPT is not useful.
- This is definitely not true. Research shows that MPT is very useful, and many professional athletes, coaches, and managers recommend MST as a necessary part of training.
Benefits of MPT
Research on elite athletes shows that the most successful athletes have better concentration, higher confidence, more task-oriented thoughts, lower anxiety, more positive thoughts and images, and more determination or commitment.
The most useful MPT topics for both athletes and coaches tend to be arousal regulation, imagery and mental preparation, increased motivation and commitment, confidence, attention & concentration, self-talk, and mental plans.
Remember, MPT enhances sport performance. Numerous research publications and testimonials from athletes, coaches, and managers indicate this as well.
