Mental Performance for Elite Athletes: The Power of Affirmation & Dealing with “What-Ifs”

Introduction
As athletes, we should seize every opportunity to boost our self-confidence. This might need to be done many times a day. Alongside this, it’s crucial to manage any doubts and worries that often show up as “What-Ifs.”

The Ultimate Affirmation
The Ultimate Affirmation is a 3-step process that focuses on our strengths and what we want to accomplish:
1. Identify your foremost strength that proves you can achieve your goal.
2. Determine what you ultimately want to accomplish.
3. Combine both parts: “I am (insert answer to Question 1); I can/will (insert answer to Question 2).”

This affirmation reinforces your belief in your abilities and your commitment to your goals. Repeat it as often as needed.

Changing “What If” to “When I” (Taylor, 2017)

When questions and doubts creep in, instead of asking the default question – “What if I don’t succeed?”, try using “WHEN I.”

“WHEN I” statements remove the threat/negative perceived emotion by taking away a bad consequence and redirecting our attention and focus in a more positive direction. These statements bring us back to this moment and the task at hand, but more importantly, remind us of what we can control.

For example, “When I review my notes/game plan, arrive early, stay hydrated, smile, and have good body language, etc. – I usually have a great start to my performance.”

“WHEN I” statements put the focus on what you CAN DO, and when we do the things that make us successful, we usually get the outcome we want.

An Interesting Insight

The more emotion we invest in a thought, the longer it will stay with us. So, let’s invest our emotions in positive, empowering thoughts and affirmations.

Remember, as an athlete, your mental performance is just as important as your physical performance. Keep practicing these techniques and strive to maintain a positive mindset!
